What the tier system measures
The tier classification rates a facility's power, cooling, and network by how much redundancy and fault tolerance it has. Higher tiers tolerate more failures and maintenance without going down. The tiers are cumulative: a Tier 4 facility meets every Tier 1–3 requirement and adds fault tolerance on top.

Tier 1 & 2 — basic and redundant capacity
Single power/cooling path with little or no redundancy. Any maintenance or component failure can mean downtime. Fine for non-critical or dev/test workloads.
Tier 3 — concurrently maintainable
Redundant components and multiple distribution paths let the facility perform maintenance without taking your systems offline. A single unplanned failure can still cause disruption.
Tier 4 — fault tolerant
Everything is duplicated (2N or 2N+1) with independent paths, so any single failure—power, cooling, or distribution—has a backup that keeps you running. This is the standard for workloads where downtime is unacceptable.

Which tier do you actually need?
- Dev/test, non-critical apps → Tier 1–2 may suffice.
- Business systems that can't take downtime for maintenance → Tier 3.
- Revenue-critical, regulated, or always-on workloads → Tier 4.

Beyond the tier badge
A tier rating describes the building, not whether the provider will be a good partner. Is Tier 4 always better than Tier 3?
